Songs or Praise
So pretty much every day outside the Russell House (the student union) the university sets up speakers and employs a big, enthusiastic, black DJ who pumps out chart music… for literally no reason!
I wouldn’t care really if my apartment wasn’t on the other side of the road and Katy Perry hadn’t become my fucking alarm clock. I just don’t understand it, there isn’t even really a massive flow of people, I’d describe it as a steady trickle, why the university deems it necessary for its students to Harlem shake their way to class is beyond me. The only possible reason I can think for them doing it is that when the DJ isn’t there he is often replaced by an incoherent old preacher who shouts at the trickle that they are going to hell, probably for the debaucherous behavior the chart music preaches every other day.
Is this it? Just the way that the more progressive younger generation has chosen to deal with in your face preachers, blare music in their usual haunts and drown them out? I guess its working if that is indeed the aim but I don’t know what I prefer as I sip my morning coffee on my balcony, hearing Akon declare that he just had sex or have an old man tell me that if I have sex I am going to hell… At least I might meet Akon I guess. But then who wants to meet Akon.
