A good ol’ southern girl sat next to me in class the other week and polite conversation ensued. She asked me, “what did you think of Black Friday?” and I was keen to answer.
“It’s so stupid!” I said, “I can’t believe how big it was! it was even big in England!”
She frowned, “but I thought y’all din’t even have thanksgiving in England?”
Now at this point I still thought that the Black Friday we were talking about Rebecca Blacks song ‘Friday’ and I was a wee bit confused. What had this got to do with thanksgiving? The only connection I could think of was a similarly awful video to Rebecca Blacks’ that I had seen on youtube (see above). An equally nasal, doubly as annoying little shit sings in autotune about thanksgiving. It’s an easy mistake to make. Sort of.
“No, thanksgiving made it to England” I said, “but that’s a load of shit too, it’s just a kid trying to make money.”
She frowned. I could see the ‘bloody-British-they-just-don’t-understand-anything’ look had come over her. “I think its an important part of our cultureactually and it reminds us of our family values” she sniffed.
I tried to recall the video, well aware that I had my ‘Bloody-Americans-confusing-pop-idols-for-culture’ face on. What possible family values are demonstrated in that video?! There’s not even a family in it! just a big black guy having a teaparty with a bunch of kids whilst one of them sings into something that looks horrible phallic. The only people who argued that those are normal family values were Michael Jackson’s lawyers!
After that me and the nice lass didn’t speak anymore. By the time I realized my error it was too late, another friend lost to a failure in translation. Though a while ago she did tell me she loved English music saying, “yeah especially Olly Murs.” So I guess its not that big of a loss.
Note to Brits: Black Friday is actually the Friday after thanksgiving where all across America people show that its not just anti-capitalist hippies that can camp on the streets for a cause. The shops have giant clearance sales so you have to be first in the queue! The commitment of shoppers is insane, people are literally trampled by wild women fighting tooth and nail for 20% off sneakers! As long as the cause for your camping is rampant consumerism of new x-box games and other tat then its fine I guess..
Note to Americans: Thanksgiving the holiday is not in England.
